The final day of the Winter Session of the Assam Assembly saw tense moments as Congress MLAs staged a brief walkout from the House today. The day’s proceedings were continuing as usual when the Congress members suddenly rose and expressed their dissatisfaction over not being allowed to raise an urgent issue.
According to the Congress MLAs, they had sought a discussion on the growing controversy surrounding Tezpur Central University. They said the matter was important, and they wanted the House to take it up during the session. However, the Speaker did not grant permission for the discussion. This led to visible frustration among the Congress members.
Soon after the Speaker’s decision, the Congress MLAs stood up and announced that they would leave the House in protest. They then walked out of the Assembly hall, saying that the government was avoiding a serious issue that needed attention. The walkout lasted for a short period, after which the opposition leaders rejoined the proceedings.
