The Nagaon district administration today carried out a major eviction drive in the Lutumari Reserved Forest under Kampur in Assam’s Nagaon district. The operation began early in the morning, with officials moving into the area around 7 am to clear nearly 5,962 bighas of land that had been under encroachment for years.

According to officials, the Nagaon district administration, police personnel, and the Forest Department worked together in a coordinated effort. Four temporary camps were set up in the area to supervise the drive and ensure that the entire process moved ahead without disturbance. Prior notices were sent to all encroachers, asking them to vacate the land within the given time. Many families had already left the area after receiving these notices, but a section of people continued to stay, forcing the administration to go ahead with a full-scale eviction.

As the drive began, one house after another was demolished by the administration’s bulldozers. Around 1,700 residential structures are expected to be removed as part of the operation. Officials on the ground said the objective of the eviction is to restore the reserved forest to its original condition and protect the environment, which has been affected by long-term encroachment.

The administration has also warned that strict action will be taken against anyone attempting to obstruct the drive. Authorities said that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s repeated statements that illegal encroachments will not be allowed anywhere in the state have strengthened efforts to clear government and forest land across Assam. Similar eviction operations have already taken place in several districts over the past months.
