The Assam Legislative Assembly witnessed a tense session today as opposition leaders expressed growing frustration over what they described as unsatisfactory and evasive replies from government ministers.
Leader of Opposition and Congress MLA Debabrata Saikia walked out of the Assembly after receiving responses from Minister Bimal Borah, which he said failed to address the resolution he had raised. Although Borah spoke for over half an hour, Saikia alleged that the minister did not answer the questions directly. “The replies were inadequate and evasive,” Saikia told reporters after leaving the House, highlighting a widening disconnect between the government and opposition members in the Assembly.
In another significant development, independent MLA Akhil Gogoi was suspended from the House for raising questions regarding government land allotments for Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) offices across the state. Gogoi claimed that several government lands, including PGR and VGR areas, had been used to construct party offices, specifically pointing out the BJP’s Basistha office (Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan), where four bighas of government land were reportedly allocated.
Gogoi also criticized Minister Bimal Borah, accusing him of lacking understanding of constitutional provisions and describing his approach as “short-sighted.” The MLA urged the Assembly Speaker to remain neutral while handling such issues, emphasizing that while six lakh people live on embankments in Assam, land continues to be allotted for party offices.
