Upper Assam Buddhist Community demands justice after monk’s brutal murder

The Buddhist community in Upper Assam is in deep shock and anger following the brutal killing of Venerable Indrabansha Bhikkhu, the chief monk (Adhyaksha) of Intheng Buddha Vihara in Nogapathar, Margherita. The incident has sent ripples of fear among devotees and raised serious concerns about the safety of religious institutions in the region.

According to multiple Buddhist organisations, including the Purbanchal Bhikkhu Sangha, the All Assam Buddhist Association, and the Federation of Barua Buddhists’ Welfare Association of Assam (FBBWAA), the news of the monk’s death came as a “bolt from the blue” on November 22, 2025. Devotees were informed that Venerable Indrabansha Bhikkhu had been brutally attacked inside the Vihara by unidentified assailants. Reports suggest that the monk suffered severe injuries to the head and body, allegedly inflicted with a sharp-edged weapon. An axe was reportedly found near the scene.

Concerned followers said they had tried repeatedly to contact the monk but received no response. When they visited the Vihara to offer food, they discovered his lifeless body. The police were immediately notified, and an investigation was launched.

The Purbanchal Bhikkhu Sangha has filed a formal FIR with the Officer-in-Charge of Pangeree Police Station. The FIR states that the attack appears to be a deliberate act of homicide. It seeks registration under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including criminal trespass and intentional homicide. The organisation has demanded a thorough forensic investigation of the crime scene and the recovered weapon. They have also requested security arrangements for the monastery and pledged full cooperation, including providing witness statements and relevant documents.

Leaders of FBBWAA and the All Assam Buddhist Association expressed their deep concern about the safety of devotees. They said that followers of Buddhism now feel unsafe even in sacred places like Viharas. They described Venerable Indrabansha Bhikkhu as a gentle and noble monk who followed Lord Buddha’s teachings of compassion, moral conduct, and peace. According to them, he had no known enemies and was dedicated to the spiritual welfare of the community.

The memoranda submitted by the Buddhist organisations demanded the immediate identification and arrest of the perpetrators, acceleration of the ongoing investigation, detailed forensic examination, registration of an FIR under relevant IPC provisions, and proper security measures for the Vihara and its residents.

Four days after the murder, the police have yet to apprehend any suspects, fueling resentment and fear in the community. Religious leaders said that the killing of a spiritual teacher who promoted peace is a deeply disturbing act that warrants the strictest legal action.
