The movement, which began after the singer’s death on September 21, has grown steadily since then. By October 15, it reached 1 million mentions, 2 million two weeks later, 3 million by October 23, and 4 million by the end of the month, with support coming from the Assamese diaspora worldwide.
Zubeen Garg, born on November 18, 1972 was a celebrated singer with a career spanning over 30 years. He recorded nearly 38,000 songs in 40 languages, blending Assamese folk and Bollywood music. He was also known for social work, adopting a child, fostering 15 others, rescuing stray animals, supporting flood relief, and funding education for underprivileged children.
Zubeen passed away on 19 September 2025 in Singapore. He was at St. John’s Island when he lost consciousness while swimming. Medical reports confirmed that the cause of death was drowning, and the Singapore Police stated that they do not suspect any foul play. Earlier reports indicate that he may have had a seizure while swimming, based on his medical history. His death sparked widespread grief in Assam and across the Assamese diaspora, leading to massive online campaigns and public gatherings demanding justice and remembrance.
During the Assam Assembly’s winter session, protests over the investigation intensified, with demands for a neutral inquiry. The government announced that a charge sheet will be filed by December 8.
