The Assam Legislative Assembly witnessed intense debate today as Raijor Dal President and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi raised serious concerns regarding the death of popular singer Zubeen Garg and questioned the state government’s handling of the case.
During the winter session, Gogoi alleged that Zubeen Garg was killed by Shyamkanu Mahanta and highlighted that while Mahanta was arrested promptly, his wife has yet to face any investigation. He also raised questions about External Affairs Ministry involvement in a Northeast festival held in Singapore, pointing out that Minister of State Pabitra Margherita has not been questioned in connection with the matter. Gogoi asked why the organizers and other officials present during the event, including the yacht captain involved in the incident, have not been called for investigation.
Speaker Biswajit Daimary intervened, reminding members that the Zubeen Garg case is under investigation and sub judice. He said that discussing ongoing investigations in the House could interfere with the process. Despite this, Gogoi pressed on, seeking clarity on what exactly transpired on the yacht on September 19, when Garg reportedly jumped into the water despite being unwell.
Gogoi questioned why proper protocol was not followed during Garg’s Singapore visit, noting that no government doctor or protocol officer accompanied him despite the event being government-organized. He described the situation as negligence by the Assam government, asserting that Zubeen Garg was not provided the care and security due to a state guest.
Citing the Bharatiya Nagrita Suraksha Nyay Act, 2023, Gogoi explained that if an incident occurs abroad, Indian courts can request evidence and witness statements from foreign authorities. He asked why the Assam government has not taken steps under this law to collect evidence and questioned why Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has not acted to ensure justice.
Gogoi demanded accountability and justice for Zubeen Garg, urging the government to follow legal procedures and investigate all individuals connected to the incident, both in India and abroad.
