Tension in Khurai Lamlong as protesters clash with Police over Sangai Festival Tension in Khurai Lamlong as protesters clash with Police over Sangai Festival

A tense situation unfolded in the Khurai Lamlong area today as a large group of demonstrators gathered to oppose the start of the Sangai Festival. The protest, which began peacefully, soon turned heated when police moved in and resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the crowd.

The protest was part of a wider “cease work” call announced by the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI). The group has been strongly opposing the state government’s decision to hold the Sangai Festival this year, saying it is insensitive to organise a tourism event at a time when many families are still displaced by the ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur.

According to officials, the clash broke out when protesters, including several displaced people, tried to march towards the festival venue at Hapta Kangjeibung. Security forces stopped them near the Khurai Lamlong area, leading to a confrontation. Some demonstrators threw stones at the police, and the police responded by firing several rounds of tear gas shells to disperse the advancing crowd.

People at the protest said that a few participants suffered minor injuries during the clash. An image from the scene showed an elderly COCOMI member running as tear gas spread across the area, highlighting the intensity of the moment.

The “cease work” call had a major impact across the Imphal Valley since morning. Markets, shops and other commercial establishments remained shut for the day. Public vehicles did not operate, and classes in schools and colleges were suspended, adding to the disruption of daily life.

Manipur continues to remain under President’s Rule since February this year. This followed the resignation of former Chief Minister N Biren Singh, who faced strong criticism over the state government’s handling of the ethnic violence that began in May 2023. The violence has already claimed more than 260 lives and displaced thousands, leaving a deep sense of fear and insecurity across communities.
