Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is facing renewed scrutiny after allegations surfaced regarding both social media activities by a section of the state’s Miya Muslim community and claims of corruption and misuse of power leveled by Congress leader Kirip Chaliha.

Earlier this week, Sarma claimed that many Miya Muslims are creating multiple Facebook accounts using Hindu names to influence public opinion and spread anti-BJP narratives. The Chief Minister said, “Every Miya Muslim has opened five to six Facebook accounts, and in each account they use a Hindu name.” He alleged that some individuals even use these accounts to form relationships with Hindu women, revealing their real identity only after marriage. Sarma also claimed that some members of the community possess forged documents, including Aadhar cards and other identity papers, describing fake social media accounts as a “small issue” compared to document-related irregularities.

Responding to Assam’s governance and regional stability, Congress leader Kirip Chaliha raised serious concerns in a press briefing. He accused Chief Minister Sarma of fostering divisions on religious and ethnic lines and criticized his handling of domestic and regional policies in Assam and Manipur. Chaliha pointed to alleged mismanagement in the north-east, misuse of administrative powers, and corruption in state construction projects. He demanded accountability regarding the Chief Minister’s family assets, transparency in governance, and a proper investigation into the death of singer Zubeen Garg.
