Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi has clarified his remark about Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi’s marriage after a question from a well-wisher sparked debate on social media. The comment was made during a live session where someone asked Akhil about the wedding plans of Lurinjyoti Gogoi, who is also seen as one of the young leaders of the Opposition camp in Assam.

During the live interaction, Akhil responded sharply to the question. He said, “Brother, talk with your head.” He went on to say that there is a difference between a human and an animal. According to him, animals simply eat what they find, but humans cook food, prepare meals and do other work. His tone indicated irritation, and he scolded the person who asked the question.

Akhil later said that the conversation was being misunderstood. He said the remark about Lurinjyoti’s marriage was made earlier during an informal moment before an Opposition meeting. He shared that journalists are not allowed inside such meetings, but they often take photographs and notes from the free time the leaders get before the meeting starts.

He said that during this free time, Opposition leaders usually talk casually, since they are relaxed and have nothing formal going on yet. Akhil stated that it was in one such light moment that he joked about Lurinjyoti getting married. “I said it in fun. That was my mistake,” he admitted. He emphasised that these casual conversations should not be taken seriously or turned into controversy.

Akhil further said that Opposition leaders in Assam maintain a friendly atmosphere when they meet. “We do fun, we talk freely,” he said. He also highlighted that unlike the BJP, the Opposition does not function under a strict hierarchy. “We do not have leaders like the BJP has. They have bosses like Himanta Biswa Sarma, and at the national level Narendra Modi and Amit Shah. Their leaders cannot speak freely in front of their bosses,” Akhil said.

He compared this to the Opposition camp, saying that they do not operate with such rigid control. “We do not have a boss like that. We talk freely. We make jokes. That is human nature,” he added.

Akhil also said that he and Lurinjyoti share a personal friendship and a close bonding beyond politics. “Me and Lurin have a personal friendship. We make fun of each other. People should understand this,” he said.
