The Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) is preparing to begin work on a new memorial park in honour of late Assamese singer Zubeen Garg. The council has decided to set up a public park in his name at Onthaigwlao in Elaisijhar, Chandrapara under Kokrajhar district. The foundation stone will be laid on November 18, which is also Zubeen Garg’s birthday.
According to officials, the park will be constructed on about 30 bighas of land. Earlier, there were mixed reports about the land size, but authorities have now confirmed that the project will cover 30 bighas. The BTC government will take up the project, and more details about the park’s layout, design, and facilities will be announced soon.
BTC Chief Executive Member and BPF chief Hagrama Mohilary had first announced the plan soon after Zubeen Garg passed away on September 19, 2025. Mohilary visited the singer’s residence on September 28 to pay his respects and meet the family. During the visit, he said that the BTC would build a park and install a statue of the singer to honour his legacy. He said the project would ensure that Garg’s contribution to Assamese music “remains alive in the hearts of people”.
People in Kokrajhar and nearby areas have welcomed the decision. Many fans feel the park will become an important landmark in the district and will keep the memory of the late singer alive for future generations. Locals say the site is likely to attract visitors from across the state once it is completed.
A large gathering is expected on November 18 as the foundation stone will be laid on the singer’s birthday. BTC officials have said that preparations are underway to manage the crowd, as a huge number of fans and supporters are likely to attend the event to pay tribute to the cultural icon.
