A deleted social media post by the Janata Dal (United) declaring Nitish Kumar as Bihar’s Chief Minister has sparked widespread speculation over the state’s leadership after the NDA’s strong performance in the assembly elections.
On Friday, the JD(U) tweeted, “Nitish Kumar was the Chief Minister, is the Chief Minister, and will remain the Chief Minister of Bihar.” However, within minutes, the party removed the post, triggering discussions across social media and among political analysts. Posters and billboards in Patna promoting Nitish’s return, including slogans like “25 se 30, phir se Nitish”, were also visible across the city, adding to the buzz.
Before the elections, the BJP had emphasised contesting under Nitish Kumar’s leadership but never officially confirmed whether he would resume the chief minister’s role. Analysts note that the BJP, which emerged as the single largest party, may have strategic considerations similar to Maharashtra in 2024, where despite pre-election announcements, Devendra Fadnavis was installed as CM instead of Shiv Sena’s Eknath Shinde.
Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary has also been named in speculation circles as a potential contender for the top post. Known for his organisational skills and political experience, Chaudhary’s name has emerged as part of possible BJP-led post-poll manoeuvres.
The NDA’s victory, attributed to both BJP’s strong show and Nitish Kumar’s enduring popularity among women and EBC voters, has highlighted the delicate balance of power within the alliance. The JD(U), traditionally seen as the dominant partner in Bihar, negotiated equal seat-sharing with the BJP, signalling a shift in political dynamics.
