A video of suspended Congress MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed yelling at a contractor during a small bridge opening has spread fast across social media. People are talking a lot about the strong words he used in public. The event was meant to be a simple naming of a new bridge on a local road after singer Zubeen Garg. But it turned into a big argument when the MLA saw a spelling mistake on the name plate.
The contractors had put up a plaque to honor Zubeen Garg, who is loved by many in Assam for his songs and work for the state. Everyone was expecting a quick ceremony with some speeches and photos.But things changed when Sherman Ali Ahmed looked at the plaque. The name “Zubeen Garg Setu” had a wrong spelling in the word “Setu,” which means bridge in Assamese. The MLA got very upset right away. He started shouting at the contractor who built the bridge and put up the sign.
In the video, which many people have shared online, the MLA points at the plaque and says loudly, “What is this? Why should we write like this? The whole Assam is crying in the name of Zubeen Garg, and you make the spelling wrong.” He keeps going, asking who the contractor is and telling him not to come there again. “You are doing stupid job,” he says. “You should not do like this. You are thinking it as joke. Nobody is supervising. What is this?” 
The MLA was right to point out the mistake. A name plate for someone as famous as Zubeen Garg should be correct. It shows respect. He could have said it will take a week to fix the sign and get a new one made. That would have been calm and fair. But instead, he used words that no leader should say in front of people.He turned to the contractor and threatened him. “You will die by our beating,” he said. “We will thrash you by beating.” These are not words for a public meeting. This is not how an MLA talks, especially one who is supposed to set an example for the community.
Threatening to beat someone up is wrong and scary. It makes people worry about safety at such events.The contractor looked shocked and tried to explain, but the MLA kept shouting. Some people at the spot tried to calm him down, but he was too angry. The video shows him waving his hands and walking close to the man.
Sherman Ali Ahmed is already suspended from the Congress party for other reasons. Now this video has made more people question his behavior. Many say an MLA should use polite language, even when things go wrong. A small spelling error does not need threats of violence. Leaders are there to solve problems, not create fear.
The mistake on the plaque seems like a simple printing error, nothing more.This is not the first time Sherman Ali Ahmed has been in news for strong words. But this time, the video makes it clear for everyone to see.
In a state like Assam, where people look up to their leaders, such language hurts the image of politics. Naming it after Zubeen Garg was a good idea to honor his help during floods and other times. The plaque will be changed, the bridge will stand, but the words said that day will be remembered for a long time.
