A serious clash over char land erupted in Kathalguri Char under the Chamaria constituency on Saturday, leaving fourteen people injured and sparking tension in the area. The confrontation has brought long-standing disputes over land ownership to the forefront, with villagers raising concerns over alleged land grabbing and fraudulent sales.
According to local sources, a group of town-based leaders allegedly sold portions of char land to outsiders, depriving genuine landowners of their rightful property. Villagers accused these individuals of running a “dictatorial regime” in the locality, creating widespread resentment that eventually escalated into Saturday’s violent clash.
The fight broke out between two rival factions led by Amir Chan Ali and Sadeq Ali, both claiming ownership of the disputed land. Armed with sticks, bamboo poles, and sharp weapons, members of the two groups attacked each other fiercely, resulting in multiple casualties.
The injured have been identified as Rukia Begum (35), Rajab Ali (54), Farizul Haque (37), Ayamna Khatun (60), Azmal Haque (29), Jainuddin (70), Anar Hussain (59), Jahirun Nessa (25), Moynal Haque (35), Saddam (32), Shahidul Islam (25), Sahjahan Ali (50), Dabir Ali (80), and Ayamna Khatun (40).
All the injured were immediately taken to the Goraimari Community Health Centre for treatment. One of the critically injured victims has been referred to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for advanced care.
Char lands in lower Assam are often prone to disputes due to unclear ownership records and the tendency for influential individuals to exploit these lands. Local residents have urged the administration to step in promptly to restore peace, prevent further violence, and ensure justice for the rightful landowners.
Police sources said an investigation has been initiated, and efforts are underway to identify and take action against those responsible for instigating the clash. Residents hope that a swift response from the authorities will prevent similar incidents in the future.
