Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has spoken on the ongoing discussion about the lack of recognition given to Assam’s cricket champion and national pride, Uma Chetry. The minister said that every sportsperson representing the country deserves full respect, appreciation, and support from both the public and the government.
Speaking to reporters, Sonowal said, “We have respect for every player. We are proud of them. Whatever needs to be done by the state government will be done.” He added that the state and central governments under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi have always taken steps to promote and honour sportspersons across the country.
Referring to the achievements of athletes from different parts of India, Sonowal said that Prime Minister Modi has consistently shown encouragement and respect for all sports personalities. “In the last 11 years, the way Prime Minister Modi has improved the sports environment in the country is remarkable. He always congratulates every player and motivates them,” Sonowal said.
The minister further added that under the leadership of the Prime Minister, India’s sports culture has undergone a positive change. “Because of the Prime Minister’s vision, sportsmen and women from remote parts of the country are now coming forward. They are feeling motivated, inspired, and respected,” he said.
On the matter of Uma Chetry, who recently made headlines after becoming a World Cup champion, Sonowal said that she has made Assam and the entire nation proud. He assured that the government recognizes her contribution and will ensure that her achievements receive proper respect. “From the state government’s side, whatever is needed will be done. We are proud of Uma and all our players who represent the country,” he stated.
Sonowal also called upon the people of Assam to take pride in the achievements of sportspersons like Uma Chetry. He said that citizens should celebrate their success and encourage young talents to follow in their footsteps. “Every sportsperson who brings glory to the country deserves love, respect, and support. We must all come together to honour them equally,” he added.
The minister’s remarks come amid growing public sentiment that Uma Chetry, despite her historic achievement, did not receive the kind of recognition she deserved from some sections of society. Many people across Assam have expressed their admiration for the young cricketer, whose dedication and humility have inspired countless young girls to take up sports.
Sonowal said that sports is not just about competition, but also about unity, discipline, and national pride. “Sports connects people. It teaches teamwork, patience, and respect. Every sportsperson who represents India carries the nation’s hope, and they should be honoured for their hard work and sacrifice,” he said.
