Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Assam soon to inaugurate two major development projects that are expected to strengthen connectivity and boost agriculture in the state. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma called on the Prime Minister in New Delhi on Tuesday and invited him to inaugurate the new terminal of Guwahati’s Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport and lay the foundation stone for the ₹10,601-crore Namrup Ammonia-Urea complex.
The meeting between the Chief Minister and the Prime Minister took place at the PM’s official residence and lasted for about 20 minutes. During the meeting, the Chief Minister briefed the Prime Minister about the importance of the projects for Assam and the Northeast. He also expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for agreeing to visit Assam for the ceremonies.
The new terminal at Guwahati airport has been described as a modern facility built to meet the growing passenger demand in the region. It will have the capacity to handle over 1.3 crore passengers annually, making Guwahati a major aviation hub in the Northeast. With improved facilities and handling capacity, the terminal is expected to ease air traffic pressure and support faster connectivity to different parts of the country.
The Namrup project, which will involve the construction of a brownfield Ammonia-Urea plant, is considered important for supporting agriculture in the region. Once operational, the ₹10,601-crore complex will help ensure a steady fertiliser supply for farmers across Assam and other Northeastern states, which will strengthen agricultural activities and benefit rural areas.
After the meeting, the Chief Minister wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that he had the privilege of meeting the Prime Minister and extending the invitation for the two major events. He said that the new airport terminal will transform Guwahati’s air connectivity and make the city a key aviation centre, while the Namrup plant will secure fertiliser availability for the Northeast. “Grateful that Adarniya Modi Ji has kindly consented. We eagerly await his visit,” he wrote.
