The United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) may soon part ways with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), ending a political partnership that began in 2020. The indication came from UPPL General Secretary Raju Kumar Narzary, who on Wednesday said that a final decision regarding the alliance will likely be taken in December during the party’s Triennial Conference.
Speaking to reporters in Kokrajhar, Narzary said, “As of now, the UPPL continues to remain in alliance with the NDA both at the state and central levels.” However, he acknowledged that the party leadership has been holding serious internal discussions on the alliance and its future political course.
The development comes in the backdrop of a major political setback for the UPPL in the 2025 Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections, where the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), led by Hagrama Mohilary, returned to power — effectively ending the UPPL’s five-year rule. The UPPL, under Pramod Boro, had earlier governed the BTC in coalition with the BJP since 2020.
According to Narzary, the party is now focused on reorganising and revitalising its grassroots network across the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR). To strengthen its presence ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, the UPPL plans to launch a series of bike rallies in all Assembly constituencies within the BTR. The objective, he said, is to connect with local communities, mobilise support, and encourage party workers to play a more active role in upcoming campaigns.
