Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President and Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on the BJP-led Assam government, accusing it of injustice, misuse of power, and suppression of democratic voices. Addressing a large public gathering, Gogoi said that if Congress returns to power, it will work for the people and not for personal gain.

He also announced that a district-level mass joining programme will be held on November 10, where new members will be inducted into the Congress party. Gogoi said this event would mark the beginning of a people-driven political movement in Assam, aimed at restoring justice and dignity to all communities.

Speaking at length, Gogoi accused the current state government of betraying every section of society. “This government has done injustice to everyone. It has failed to fulfil the constitutional demands of various communities. The promises made under Clause 6 of the Assam Accord were nothing but deception,” he said, adding that the BJP government has repeatedly ignored the voice of the people.

The Congress leader assured that if his party comes to power, it would bring transparency, accountability, and fairness in governance. “We will not run the government for our own benefit. We will not start businesses in the name of family or accumulate wealth. Our government will fulfil people’s demands and focus on their welfare. We will not use the police to silence citizens or create fear,” Gogoi declared.

Taking a strong stand on freedom of the press, Gogoi accused the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government of targeting journalists who question authority. “When a journalist asks a question, we will not demand the owner’s name. We will not bring in the SIT to threaten them. People have a right to ask questions, and we will protect that right,” he said.

He alleged that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) is being used as a tool to create fear and confusion. Referring to several cases, he asked, “What happened in the case of Jonmoni Rabha? What happened in my own case? Why are facts not being made public? The SIT is being misused to divert public attention.”

Gogoi also hit out at the Chief Minister for what he called a “change in tone” regarding justice in the Zubeen Garg case. “The Chief Minister earlier said he would deliver justice. Now he says only the court can do so. Why this sudden change? The people deserve to know the truth,” Gogoi remarked.

He further accused the ruling party of attempting to distort Assam’s cultural and historical identity. “They called Rabindranath Tagore’s poem a Bangladeshi Miyan song. They have no understanding of history or culture. And why hasn’t the SIT summoned Rita Chowdhury yet?” he questioned.

On the sensitive issue surrounding the death of singer-composer Zubeen Garg, Gogoi sent a strong message to the government. “Do your work, government. Stop defaming Zubeen da, his family, his fans, and the artist community. The people are watching. You still have five months left in office — use that time to serve the people. After that, the people will give their reply,” he said.
