Action intensifies against Veer Lachit Sena across Assam Action intensifies against Veer Lachit Sena across Assam

The Assam government has intensified its crackdown on the Veer Lachit Sena, a self-styled organization that has come under scrutiny for its alleged unlawful activities. Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the state will take strict action against any group that misuses the name of Assam or collects money from the public under false pretences.

Speaking to reporters, Dr Sarma said that the Veer Lachit Sena has been collecting funds from “Sadiya to Dhubri” in the name of social work, but such activities have raised serious questions about the group’s real intentions. He emphasized that the government will not tolerate any organization that threatens law and order or spreads confusion among the public. “No one has the right to use Assam’s name for personal gain or to create unrest,” the Chief Minister stated firmly.

The crackdown followed a dramatic development earlier this week when Rantu Paniphukan, the Chief Secretary of the Veer Lachit Sena, was arrested by Dispur Police on Monday evening. Paniphukan was detained mid-press conference at a city hotel while addressing the media on allegations against the organization. Eyewitnesses said that police officers entered the hall abruptly and escorted him out as supporters raised slogans. He was taken to the Dispur Police Station for interrogation and later formally arrested.

According to police officials, Paniphukan’s arrest is linked to an ongoing investigation into a kidnapping case involving a local businessman. The police said that his position as a senior functionary made him a person of interest in the case. He is expected to be produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court for further proceedings.

The arrest has triggered strong reactions from within the Veer Lachit Sena. The group’s Administrative Secretary, Shrinkhal Chaliha, issued a sharp statement condemning the government’s move. He described it as a “politically motivated attempt to suppress the voice of the Sena” and vowed that members would continue their movement peacefully but firmly. “We will not accept this arrest under any circumstances. Even with my deteriorating health, we will take to the streets if needed,” Chaliha declared.

Chaliha also announced that the Sena had suspended one of its members, Bikash Axom, from all responsibilities in Kamrup district. The decision came after allegations surfaced linking him to the same kidnapping case that led to Paniphukan’s arrest. The group has maintained that it will carry out its own internal inquiry into the matter.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sarma held a video conference with all Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) across Assam on Monday night to review the overall law and order situation. The meeting focused on ensuring that no organization or individual is allowed to disturb peace in the state. Sources said that the Chief Minister directed police officials to maintain vigilance and take swift action wherever necessary.
