One of Bollywood’s most loved films from the 1990s, Rangeela, is all set to return to the big screen after three decades. The romantic drama, starring Aamir Khan, Urmila Matondkar and Jackie Shroff, will be re-released in theatres across India on November 28, 2025, in a newly restored 4K high-definition version.

The re-release of Rangeela marks exactly 30 years since it first hit cinemas in 1995. The film, directed by Ram Gopal Varma, was a major turning point in Hindi cinema — blending a modern storytelling style, vibrant visuals and the unforgettable music of A.R. Rahman. For many movie lovers, Rangeela is more than just a film — it’s a nostalgic journey back to an era when Bollywood music and fashion were transforming rapidly.

In a statement, director Ram Gopal Varma said the film captured the changing spirit of Indian youth during the 1990s. “Rangeela embodied the spirit of aspiration, showing that ordinary people can also dare to dream big. Its success demonstrated that rule-breaking cinema is often the most unforgettable,” he said.

The film’s story followed the journey of Mili, played by Urmila Matondkar, a young woman from a humble background who dreams of becoming a film star. Aamir Khan played Munna, a carefree street-smart character deeply in love with her, while Jackie Shroff portrayed Raj Kamal, a famous film actor who falls for Mili. The love triangle, mixed with the film’s colorful visuals and timeless songs like Tanha Tanha, Hai Rama, and Rangeela Re, made it an instant classic.

The restored version is being released under the Ultra Rewind project by Ultra Media, which aims to bring back India’s classic films to the big screen using modern technology. The company has previously restored and showcased masterpieces such as Pyaasa, Sahib Biwi aur Ghulam, and Kaagaz Ke Phool.

Explaining the idea behind the re-release, Sushilkumar Agrawal, CEO of Ultra Media, said, “For many, Rangeela is a nostalgic trip back to the golden era of Bollywood. With Ultra Rewind, we’re bringing this beloved classic to modern audiences in a stunning 4K format, ensuring that its timeless charm continues to mesmerize audiences for years to come.”
