A day after the dramatic arrest of Veer Lachit Sena leader Rantu Pani Phukan during a live press conference in Guwahati, the organisation has claimed that a deep conspiracy is being plotted against them. Chief Secretary of the Veer Lachit Sena, Rantupani Phukan, said that the arrest was part of a larger plan to weaken their movement and silence their voices.
Phukan said, “A conspiracy is going on against us. We have always raised our voice for the people of Assam and for justice. But now, we are being targeted for speaking the truth.” He further added that the government and certain political forces were deliberately trying to tarnish the image of the organisation.
Phukan alleged that the arrests was a deliberate attempt to humiliate the group in front of the public. “It is very clear that this action was pre-planned. The timing and manner of the arrest show that it was meant to create fear among our members,” he said.
Veer Lachit Sena chief Rantu Pani Phukan was arrested by Dispur Police at around 4 PM on October 27 during a live media interaction at Hotel Apollo Grand in Guwahati. Police sources stated that the arrest was linked to the Borbari abduction and extortion case, where eight accused were earlier arrested for allegedly demanding a ransom of Rs 15–20 lakh. Investigators claimed that Phukan’s name surfaced during the interrogation of the suspects, prompting immediate action.
Police took him into custody and brought him to the Dispur Police Station for further questioning. Officials said that more evidence was being collected to establish his alleged involvement in the case. However, members of the Veer Lachit Sena strongly refuted these claims, calling the arrest “politically motivated” and “an act of suppression.”
Shortly after the arrest, Veer Lachit Sena chief Shrinkhal Chaliha criticised the government’s move and demanded Phukan’s immediate release. He described the arrest as a “fascist act” aimed at silencing the voice of regional organisations. “If the government continues to target us, we will not stay silent. There will be strong opposition from our side,” Chaliha had warned.
