Veer Lachit Sena on government radar — ban likely, says CM Sarma Veer Lachit Sena on government radar — ban likely, says CM Sarma

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said that the state government is seriously considering a ban on the Veer Lachit Sena, a self-styled organisation accused of creating public disorder, extortion, and violence. Speaking to reporters in Guwahati, the Chief Minister made it clear that the state will not tolerate anyone who disturbs peace in the name of cultural or social work.

“We are deeply dissatisfied with the activities of the Veer Lachit Sena. They have been creating a disturbing atmosphere in the name of cultural activities and donation drives. They have also caused damage to the environment. If necessary, we may have to consider a ban, just like in the case of ULFA(I),” said the Chief Minister.

He further said that the government has already begun monitoring the organisation’s operations closely. “I am not taking any names, but action will follow. We are strictly focused on their activities,” he warned.

Sarma also expressed disappointment at how the group has misused the name of Assam’s legendary hero, Lachit Borphukan. “The organisation has destroyed the environment by demanding money, fighting, and creating fear among people. This is unacceptable,” he said.

The government’s strong statement comes just a day after a shocking kidnapping incident in Guwahati, allegedly involving individuals associated with the Veer Lachit Sena.

On Sunday night, Rahul Mishra was abducted from outside Pratikshya Hospital in Borbari by a group of 10 to 15 unidentified men. The police acted swiftly after receiving a call from Mishra’s friend, Ershad Khan from Goalpara, who reported the abduction around 9:30 p.m.

A team from Dispur Police Station traced the kidnappers to Tribeni Path and rescued the victim within hours. Six suspects were arrested on the spot, and two others were nabbed later. During interrogation, some of the accused reportedly mentioned links to the Veer Lachit Sena, prompting a deeper investigation by the police.

Police sources said the kidnappers had demanded a ransom of ₹15–20 lakh before being caught. The case has raised serious concerns about the involvement of certain groups in criminal activities under the guise of social or cultural work.

With increasing complaints about forceful “donation drives,” threats, and acts of violence, the state government is now preparing for a possible crackdown on the Veer Lachit Sena. Senior police officials confirmed that surveillance and intelligence gathering have been intensified across Guwahati and nearby districts.

Chief Minister Sarma said that the government will not allow anyone to take the law into their own hands. “No group or person will be allowed to behave above the law. Strict action will be taken against those who try to disturb Assam’s peace,” he said.

He also issued a stern warning, saying, “Action will be taken against those who misbehave with the grandmother of Assam,” referring symbolically to anyone who disrespects the state and its cultural pride.
