Seven people, including the secretary of a local club, were arrested on Saturday for assaulting the Officer in Charge (OC) of a police station in South Tripura district. Shibu Ranjan Dey, the OC of Belonia police station, had switched off the sound system of Oriental Club on Friday night due to high-decibel music and dance.
“As the OC switched off the sound system, angry club members pushed him to the ground and started assaulting him,” said Tripura Police spokesperson Rajdeep Deb. “A specific case has been registered against seven members of the Oriental Club, including its secretary, for voluntarily causing grievous hurt to deter a public servant from discharging his duty and other charges. All the accused persons were arrested. An investigation is on,” the spokesperson added.
The incident occurred late Friday night when tension rose after the club’s loud music disrupted the area. Locals said the OC arrived promptly to enforce peace and prevent further trouble. However, the situation quickly turned violent, leaving OC Dey injured. Police sources confirmed that swift action was taken to arrest the assailants and ensure the safety of the officer.
The assault comes just a day after another incident in Bilonia town, where a police officer was attacked while trying to stop a clash during a Vijaya Dashami procession. Reports said members of the Oriental Club had obstructed a procession organized by the No. 1 Tila Merchant Association. What started as an argument escalated into a confrontation, prompting police intervention.
Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Bilonia and additional forces were deployed to bring the situation under control. Three people have been arrested in connection with the procession clash so far, while investigations are ongoing to identify others involved.
