Thousands of people gathered in Gossaigaon today in a large rally organised by the All Santal Students’ Union (ASSU), demanding tribal recognition, land pattas, and Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for the Santhal community under the Peace Accord 2022. The demonstration reflected deep frustration among community members over long-standing unfulfilled promises by the state government.
The rally began in front of the statue of tribal freedom fighters Sido Murmu and Kanhu Murmu in Haraputa, Gossaigaon subdivision, and moved through Gandhi Nagar, drawing attention from residents and local authorities. Participants carried banners and raised slogans such as “Assam Government, listen to our demands” and “No ST, No Rest,” voicing their demand for formal recognition and legal protection for Santhal families who have lived in the area for decades.
Speaking to reporters, a Santal protester said, “Our people have lived in the forest areas for over 30 years. We are asking for our land rights and proper pattas. The government must recognise our existence and our contribution to the region.” Another protester highlighted the historical struggles of the community, adding, “Our fighters have always stood against injustice. We are a peaceful community, but we will continue to fight for our rights if the government ignores us.”
The organisers said that the rally was part of an ongoing effort to press the state for the speedy implementation of the Peace Accord 2022. They urged the authorities to issue ethnic certificates and distribute land pattas promptly. More than a thousand men and women participated in the protest, showing strong solidarity and determination to see their demands met.
