Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday announced that he will personally join the public in demanding justice for late singer Zubeen Garg once the official charge sheet in the case is filed. Speaking to the media, Sarma made it clear that his support for the #JusticeForZubeenGarg campaign is firm and unwavering.
“The day I issue the charge sheet, the next day I too will take to the streets for justice. Because justice will be delivered by the court,” the Chief Minister said. He added, “I am the Chief Minister, not the Chief Justice. Therefore, the day we submit the SIT report, I too will take to the streets from the very next day.” Through these statements, Sarma emphasized his commitment to ensuring that justice reaches the singer’s family and fans, while also urging everyone to place their trust in the judiciary.
The announcement comes amid ongoing discussions within the state BJP about forming a united front to press for justice in the high-profile case. The campaign has already gained widespread attention on social media, with the hashtag #JusticeForZubeenGarg trending across various platforms. Sarma reassured the public, stating, “I am also with #JusticeForZubeenGarg,” highlighting his personal and political support for the cause.
Earlier, on October 23, the Chief Minister expressed deep concern over disturbing incidents at Zubeen Garg’s cremation site in Sonapur, where individuals reportedly poured alcohol as a tribute. Speaking to the press, Sarma condemned these acts, saying, “It feels sad that people are pouring alcohol as a tribute at the cremation site. Offerings should be flowers, not tobacco or alcohol.” He stressed that Zubeen’s identity should be celebrated through his music and creativity, not through rituals that could tarnish his legacy.
Sarma further elaborated, “Even Bhupen Hazarika drank alcohol, but that never became his identity — his music and broad mind defined him. We will not let anyone distort Zubeen’s image. Instead, his art should be cherished — songs like Mayabini and Hur Hur Hurai De should define who he was.” The Chief Minister urged fans and the public to honour the singer by respecting his memory and artistic contributions.
