The results of the Guwahati Press Club (GPC) elections were declared on Wednesday. Senior journalist Amarendra Deka of Pratidin Time was elected as the General Secretary, while Khagen Kalita secured the President post. Other key office bearers include Samiran Borthakur as Cultural Secretary, Shah Alom as Assistant General Secretary (AGS) and Dipankar Das as Organisational Secretary. Moreover, Padmini Hazarika was elected as Assistant General Secretary (Reserved) and Dipankar Das of NEWS18 won the post of Sports Secretary.

The elections, held on Tuesday, witnessed a remarkable turnout, with 933 out of 1,114 eligible members casting their votes, resulting in an 83.84 percent voter turnout; one of the highest in recent years. Voting began at 8 a.m. and continued peacefully throughout the day, reflecting the growing interest and unity among journalists in Guwahati. Returning Officer Gautam Sharma described the process as smooth and well-managed, expressing satisfaction at the active participation.

This year’s election was among the most vibrant and closely contested in recent history. More than 20 candidates contested for 10 key posts, including President, General Secretary, and Treasurer. The presidential race saw a direct contest between Khagen Kalita of Crosscurrent and Bhuban Chetia of Prag News, while the General Secretary post witnessed a four-way battle among Amarendra Deka, Apurba Karjee (DY365), Jonjyoti Duttabora (NB News) and Pranjal Baruah (News Live).

The vote counting, which began at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, continued for nearly 12 hours, concluding around 9 p.m. Journalists from across the city gathered at the GPC premises in Ambari to witness the results.
