BJP marches for justice against… its own government? AJP slams party politics

Speaking exclusively to Northeast Scoop, Lurinjyoti Gogoi launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, saying, “The Chief Minister’s statement is like that of an idiot. When the BJP is in power in Assam, whom are they asking justice from? Themselves?”

In Assam, the BJP’s campaign for “justice for Zubeen Garg” has raised many questions. Opposition leaders, led by AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi, have criticised the move, saying it makes no sense for the ruling party to demand justice from its own government.

Gogoi accused the ruling party of using the name of the late singer Zubeen Garg for political mileage, claiming that the BJP is “doing politics in the name of an artist who was loved by all Assamese people.” He questioned how a party that controls both the administration and the police can take to the streets demanding justice in a case that falls under its own jurisdiction.

The AJP chief said that BJP’s campaign is nothing more than a political cover-up. “There is a BJP-led government in Assam. The investigation into Zubeen Garg’s death has been going on for a month now. People are asking where the investigation is heading. Has justice been served? No. The public is demanding answers, not rallies,” Gogoi said.

He further alleged that names linked to the investigation have close ties with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his family. Gogoi claimed that even the company associated with the Chief Minister’s wife has connections with the Northeast Festival, which Zubeen Garg had also been part of in the past. “To hide all these connections, the BJP has started this campaign. This is not about justice; it is about hiding the truth,” he alleged.

According to Gogoi, the BJP is trying to divert public attention through street campaigns and emotional slogans. “Now they are saying who are the true fans of Zubeen Garg. Who decides that? For the Chief Minister, what is the parameter to be a fan of Zubeen? His comments have no sense,” Gogoi added.

The BJP’s state-wide campaign, where its leaders and supporters marched with party flags demanding justice for the beloved singer, has confused many citizens. The question that echoes across Assam is simple.. when the ruling party itself is asking for justice, from whom are they seeking it?

Even senior BJP leaders appeared divided on the issue. While BJP MP Dilip Saikia said that “the court will give justice,” other leaders claimed that the government is committed to uncovering the truth. Yet, the very act of launching a public campaign while in power has raised uncomfortable questions for the ruling party.

The opposition parties, including the Congress and AJP, have accused the BJP of playing with public emotions. The Assam Congress, in a post shared on its official Facebook page, questioned the logic behind the campaign.

It has been more than a month since Zubeen Garg’s tragic death, but no conclusive updates have been released by the investigating agencies. The delay has fueled speculation and frustration among the public. Opposition leaders say the government’s silence and contradictory actions are only deepening mistrust.

Gogoi pointed out that while the BJP is holding rallies, people are still waiting for clarity. “If they really care about Zubeen Garg, they should tell us what progress has been made in the investigation. Who has been questioned? What has the forensic report found? The government is answerable to the people,” he said.
