The tense situation that had arisen recently at the Assam-Meghalaya border in West Karbi Anglong district has finally eased today. The conflict, which started over paddy harvesting had created unrest among local communities and drew attention from the authorities.
At the Khanduli border outpost in the hilly district, representatives from the border villages of Tapat and Lapangup came together today and signed a formal agreement under the guidance of local authorities and village elders. This agreement is aimed at ensuring peace and harmony in the border areas, which have witnessed tension over recent weeks.
One of the key points of the agreement is that the Assam Police will now receive full cooperation from local residents in identifying the individuals responsible for the killing of Ariel Timung of Assam. Timung had lost his life on October 9 during the clashes over paddy harvesting, and the incident had escalated tensions between the two communities.
Another important aspect of the agreement is that residents of Tapat and Lapangup will refrain from engaging in any discussions or disputes regarding border territories. Decisions on such matters will now be made only by the relevant government departments, ensuring that administrative processes guide all future actions.
The agreement also lays emphasis on promoting joint activities instead of conflicts. The villages have agreed to collaborate on initiatives such as tree plantation, livestock grazing, and agricultural work in both border areas. These cooperative efforts are expected to strengthen relations between the communities and prevent misunderstandings in the future.
Today, October 22, the paddy harvesting work in Tapat across both border areas will be completed peacefully, as per the agreement. Local authorities have expressed hope that this step will restore normalcy in the region and create a cordial environment for all residents.
