Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi visited Assam today to pay tribute to the late singer Zubeen Garg, who passed away under tragic circumstances in Singapore. Arriving at Borjhar Airport around 1:30 PM, Rahul Gandhi proceeded directly to Sonapur, where he offered floral tributes and a traditional Assamese gamosa at Zubeen Garg’s cremation site in Komarkuchi.
During the memorial ceremony, Rahul Gandhi also planted a Nahor tree near the site, honoring one of the singer’s favorite trees. The tribute was attended by Assam Pradesh Congress President and MP Gaurav Gogoi, opposition leader Debabrata Saikia, Congress Assam in-charge Jitendra Singh, and a large gathering of citizens who came to pay their respects to the beloved singer.
Following the memorial, Rahul Gandhi visited Zubeen Garg’s residence in Kahilipara to meet his wife Garima Garg, family members, and pay his respects. Speaking to reporters after the visit, Rahul Gandhi spoke on the singer’s extraordinary life and character. He recalled his own experiences in Sikkim at the age of 17 during a mountaineering course, where he admired the qualities of Mount Kanchenjunga; honesty, transparency, strength and beauty. Rahul Gandhi said that Zubeen Garg reminded him of Kanchenjunga because he embodied these qualities through his work, humilit and life.
Rahul Gandhi said, “You can see the worth of a person in their house. I just came from Zubeen ji’s house. He had wealth, success, and humility. Assam should be extremely proud of him. I spoke to his father and said that his wisdom and support gave Zubeen a voice for this wonderful state. We thank him, the family, and of course Zubeen ji for what they have done, not just for Assam, but for the entire country.”
He expressed deep sorrow over Zubeen Garg’s death, calling it a tragedy that has affected the entire state. “The family only said one thing to me—they have lost their Zubeen. All they want is the truth to be clear. The people of Assam, who loved him and whose lives he changed, want closure,” Rahul Gandhi said. He said that it is the duty of the government to conduct a fast and transparent investigation into the circumstances of Zubeen Garg’s death in Singapore and inform the family of the findings.
Rahul Gandhi added, “I and the Congress party are here to support the family in every possible way. I also want to offer my condolences to the people of Assam who have suffered this cruel blow. Losing someone so important and loved is a painful moment for everyone. I stand with you in your grief.”
He said that the focus should remain on honoring Zubeen Garg and seeking transparency and justice. “What happened in Singapore, everybody in Assam should know. The sooner it happens, the better,” he said.
