Ahead of a major cabinet reshuffle, all ministers of the Gujarat government, except Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, submitted their resignations on Thursday. This development comes just a day before the expected expansion of the state cabinet.
Currently, the Gujarat cabinet has 17 ministers, including Chief Minister Patel. Among them, eight hold cabinet-rank positions, while the remaining serve as ministers of state (MoS). With the state assembly having 182 members, Gujarat is allowed to have up to 27 ministers, which is 15 percent of the total strength of the House. This leaves room for the inclusion of around 10 new ministers in the upcoming reshuffle.
Officials from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which leads the state government, confirmed that the cabinet expansion is scheduled for Friday. According to senior party leaders, nearly half of the existing ministers could be replaced.
