Utpal Sarma, President of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), has strongly condemned the violent incidents that erupted outside Baksa District Jail in the wake of the ongoing Zubeen Garg case. Speaking to the media and through a Facebook post, Sarma urged citizens to continue their protests peacefully and democratically, stressing that violence would not help in achieving justice for the late singer.
Sarma said that Zubeen Garg, known for his calm and non-violent approach, never encouraged aggressive actions. He recalled that Garg had led the anti-CAB movement personally and always called for peaceful demonstrations. “Setting fire to a media vehicle in the name of justice is not only unfortunate but completely unacceptable,” Sarma said. He emphasized that resorting to violence only weakens the public struggle for justice and tarnishes the legacy of the beloved artist.
The AASU President further demanded a thorough investigation into the violence outside the jail. He called for authorities to identify the individuals responsible and scrutinize the role of the police during the incident. Sarma questioned whether prior intelligence about possible unrest was ignored and whether proper arrangements were made to maintain law and order. “Those in charge of law enforcement must be accountable for lapses,” he added.
Highlighting the restraint shown by the public, Sarma said that from the time of Garg’s death until his final rites, millions had gathered peacefully. Even when the accused, Shyamkanu and Siddharth, were brought into custody, the crowd remained calm despite widespread anger. He questioned whether the sudden outbreak of violence was spontaneous or deliberately provoked and urged a fair and impartial probe.
