AASU leads statewide protest demanding justice for Zubeen Garg

In Rangia, members of the Kamrup District Students’ Union gathered in front of Gandhi Mandap, responding to AASU’s central call for a peaceful sit-in.

A wave of emotion swept across Assam on Tuesday as the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) organized protests in several parts of the state, demanding justice for the late singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg.

In Rangia, members of the Kamrup District Students’ Union gathered in front of Gandhi Mandap, responding to AASU’s central call for a peaceful sit-in. Holding placards and banners bearing Zubeen’s image, the protesters raised their voices for justice, urging the authorities to conduct a fair and transparent investigation. The event, supported by the Rangia Regional Students’ Union, drew a large crowd of students, local residents, and admirers from different social backgrounds. Several senior artists and cultural figures also joined the protest, expressing their grief and solidarity.

Speaking to the media, participants said Zubeen Garg was more than just a singer — he was a symbol of Assamese pride and identity. “His songs united generations. We will not rest until we get justice for him,” said one of the protestors.

A similar atmosphere of unity and determination was witnessed in Dibrugarh, where over a hundred students gathered at Choukidingi Chariali, near the Deputy Commissioner’s office. Led by the Dibrugarh District Students’ Union, the protest echoed the same demand — justice for Zubeen Garg. Members carried candles and sang some of Zubeen’s most loved songs, turning the protest into a heartfelt tribute to the artist.

Prominent AASU leaders, including Bulbul Dutta, Organizational Secretary of the Central Committee, along with Dibrugarh District President Rupjyoti Barthakur and Secretary Bitupan Gogoi, took part in the demonstration. They stressed that AASU would not stop its movement until the truth behind Zubeen’s death comes to light. “We want a speedy and impartial investigation and the strictest punishment for those responsible,” Dutta said.

Across Assam, similar protests were reported in towns like Tezpur, Jorhat, and Nagaon, where students, artists, and local citizens came together to voice their demand for justice. Social media, too, saw a surge of support, with thousands sharing the slogan “Justice for Zubeen” and calling for government accountability.
