Hundreds of people from different parts of Assam gathered at Chachal on Sunday to demand justice against land evictions and alleged illegal transfer of land to corporate companies. The massive protest, organized by the Bhumi Adhikar Joutho Sangram Samiti, was held under the banner “Adhikar Samabesh” and saw participation from men, women, and youth of various communities.
The event was a mix of cultural and political expression. Demonstrators played the songs of late singer Zubeen Garg throughout the day, using his music as a symbol of unity and resistance. Many participants said that the singer’s voice represented their struggle for justice and their fight to protect indigenous rights.
Speaking at the gathering, Subrata Talukdar of the organizing committee said the government was ignoring the plight of indigenous people. “Those who have suffered the most are the indigenous communities. The government has handed over tribal lands to corporate giants. We demand that these illegal evictions stop immediately and land pattas be given to rightful residents,” he said.
Another protester warned that women were also facing difficulties due to debt traps created by microfinance schemes and that now even their lands were being taken. “We must unite. Himanta Biswa Sarma, beware,” the protester added, addressing the Assam Chief Minister.
Several prominent leaders and intellectuals joined the protest to show their support. Dr. Hiren Gohain, Rajya Sabha MP Ajit Bhuyan, Congress MLA Nandita Das, AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi, and former MP Abdul Khaleque were present and addressed the crowd, reiterating the need to protect land rights and support indigenous communities.
