Assam Congress State President and Member of Parliament, Gaurav Gogoi, on Tuesday, addressed a press conference to voice demands from the people of Assam regarding the investigation into the death of popular singer Zubeen Garg.
“All the people of Assam have only one demand – justice for Zubeen Garg,” Gogoi said, urging the state government to conduct a proper and transparent investigation. “This is a clear and strong demand. The people want answers,” he added.
Gogoi said that statements and social media posts by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, BJP leaders and the party’s IT cell indicate that the government is reluctant to provide justice to Zubeen Garg. Instead, he claimed, the authorities appear more focused on protecting businessman Shyamkanu Mahanta.
He said, “People want to know about all incidents and investigations related to Shyamkanu Mahanta and Siddhart Sharma. But Himanta Biswa Sarma’s SIT cell seems to function like an IT cell, targeting the character of people rather than conducting a proper investigation.”
The Congress leader criticized the Special Investigation Team (SIT) for failing to probe key details of Zubeen Garg’s death. “We are not asking the SIT to investigate someone’s character. We want to know the facts: why Zubeen Garg died, why he did not wear a life jacket, whether he took medicine, and why he traveled to Singapore. Where did he stay? Which yacht did he travel on? These questions are being ignored.”
Gogoi also accused Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of shielding Shyamkanu Mahanta due to close personal ties. “The Chief Minister seems to be on a mission to save Shyamkanu Mahanta. He is diverting the discussion, trying to protect Mahanta while hurting the people of Assam and its artists. The words of a Chief Minister should carry value, but this government has lost credibility.”
He said that justice for Zubeen Garg is not just a political issue but a demand from the entire state. “The people of Assam want the truth. The artists of Assam deserve justice. It is the responsibility of the government to answer these questions transparently,” Gogoi said.
