The Tripura government has suspended five jail officials following the escape of six undertrial prisoners from Dharmanagar Sub-Jail in North Tripura on Wednesday. One of the escaped prisoners has already been recaptured, authorities confirmed.
The government took swift action on Thursday, suspending the jailor of Dharmanagar Sub-Jail, Sri Dhananjoy Bhattacharya, along with four warders—Parikhan Jamatia, Gedu Mia, Notan Lodh, and Pallab Kanti Bhowmik. Disciplinary proceedings have also been initiated against all five officials in connection with the incident.
According to an official order from the Inspector General of Prisons, Sri Bhattacharya has been placed under immediate suspension. During this period, he will be stationed at Kamalpur Sub-Jail in Dhalai district and is not permitted to leave the headquarters without prior approval from the competent authority.
The four suspended warders have been instructed to remain at Kailashahar District Jail in Unakoti district during their suspension. They too are prohibited from leaving the premises without prior authorization while disciplinary action is underway.
The Tripura government said that these measures are aimed at ensuring strict accountability and improving the security standards of the state’s correctional facilities. Officials said that the incident highlighted lapses in prison management, and the government is taking all necessary steps to prevent such escapes in the future.
