The investigation into the mysterious death of Assam’s beloved singer Zubeen Garg has taken a new turn, with Assam Police confirming that a special team will be sent to Singapore under the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT). The move comes as part of the ongoing probe, which has drawn massive public attention and continues to grip the state with speculation and emotion.

Special DGP (CID) Munna Prasad Gupta announced on Wednesday that all legal procedures are being followed in close coordination with Singapore authorities. “All necessary legal actions are being taken in close coordination with the Singapore government to ensure a thorough investigation,” Gupta said. He added that while arrangements are being made for the team’s visit abroad, parallel investigations are underway in Assam against people connected to the case.

Police sources confirmed that the mobile phones of the two main accused—Shyamkanu Mahanta and Siddharth Sharma—have been seized. In addition, Zubeen Garg’s own phone, which was reportedly in Siddharth Sharma’s possession, is now under the custody of the CID.

Reacting to a viral photograph circulating online, which claimed that Mahanta retained his mobile phone even after his arrest, Gupta dismissed the claim as false and baseless. “Once a person is taken into custody, it is not possible for them to keep their phone. This news is false,” he clarified, urging people not to spread misinformation.

Both Mahanta and Sharma are currently in the custody of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) for a period of 14 days, following an order by the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) in Guwahati. The accused were produced before the CJM at his residence in Alpana Apartment, Geetanagar, under heavy security. After the hearing, the CJM allowed the SIT to take them into custody for interrogation and evidence collection.

The transfer of Mahanta and Sharma to Guwahati was carried out under tight arrangements. Mahanta, who was flown in from Singapore via Delhi, and Sharma, who was Zubeen’s manager, have both been under scrutiny since their detention. Security was tightened not only at the CJM’s residence but also at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, reflecting the high level of public interest and sensitivity surrounding the case.
