Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday announced that the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has formally invoked the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) with Singapore in connection with the FIR lodged by Assam Police regarding the untimely death of Assam’s music legend, Zubeen Garg.
According to official communications, the Government of India, through the MHA’s IS-II Division, has forwarded an original Mutual Legal Assistance (MLA) request along with a copy to the High Commission of India in Singapore. The request seeks cooperation from the Republic of Singapore in the investigation of Case FIR 18/2025 registered with Assam Police.
The letter, signed by Under Secretary Parveen Singh, requests that the original MLA request be forwarded to the Attorney General of Singapore, who acts as the central authority for such matters. The MHA has asked to be informed once Singapore responds, so that the report or execution details can be transmitted to the Assam Police and the concerned investigating agencies.
Copies of the MLAT request have also been sent to key officials, including the Deputy Secretary of Assam’s Home Department, the Director General of Police at Assam Police Headquarters, senior officers of CID Assam, and the CBI headquarters in New Delhi. The coordination aims to ensure that all agencies involved are aware and can act swiftly once Singapore provides the requested legal assistance.
This development comes amid growing public attention and political pressure for a thorough and transparent investigation into Zubeen Garg’s death. The invocation of MLAT indicates that the investigation may involve evidence, documentation, or individuals linked to Singapore, making international cooperation crucial for progress in the case.
Chief Minister Sarma emphasized that the state government is committed to ensuring justice and fully supporting the investigation through all available legal channels. The MLAT request represents a formal step in engaging Singapore’s authorities to provide assistance in gathering evidence, verifying details, or facilitating any other legal processes that may aid the investigation.
