A major operation against illegal poppy farming was carried out in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district, where security forces destroyed around 67 acres of illicit cultivation spread across several hill locations. The information was shared in an official statement issued by Manipur Police on Monday.
According to the police, the destruction drive was carried out throughout Friday and Saturday. It included a joint team of state police personnel, central security forces, the Narcotics Control Bureau and officials from the Forest Department. The team moved across multiple hill slopes and valleys where poppy plants were reportedly grown in large patches.
Police officials said the operation covered the hill ranges of Makui Ashang, Laloi, Wakotphai, Chaljang and other nearby areas under Kangpokpi district. These locations have seen repeated instances of poppy plantation, and officials said joint action was necessary to check further expansion of such cultivation.
The police statement said that about 67 acres of poppy plants were uprooted and destroyed during the two-day action. Officials also inspected nearby areas to identify fresh patches of cultivation and to assess the spread of the activity in surrounding forest areas.
